Planting with Purpose

Every garden is different. Plant choices are guided by the soil, light, drainage, local vegetation and how you want to use the space.

Before choosing plants, we look at what the garden is already telling us: sun, shade, soil, drainage, exposure and how the space is wanting to be used.We also look at nearby Regional Ecosystems and remnant local vegetation. This means looking at what naturally grows in the area, then using that knowledge to choose plants that are more likely to belong, survive and support local wildlife.

Layered planting can help shade the home, cool outdoor areas, reduce harsh sun and create habitat. Plant choices also focus on low-maintenance and drought-tolerant species that can reduce water use once established, while still keeping the garden usable for paths, lawns, fire pits and everyday living.

Why I'm Here

Conservation cannot only happen in national parks, reserves and untouched bushland. As housing expands and natural areas continue to shrink, the spaces around our homes matter more than ever.Forbes Native Habitat Co. was created to help bring nature back into everyday living. Through native planting, habitat features and thoughtful landscaping, residential gardens can become small but valuable stepping stones for birds, pollinators, lizards, small marsupials, macropods and other local wildlife.The long-term goal is simple: to help neighbourhoods connect as wider wildlife corridors, giving native animals more places to move, feed, shelter and survive into the future.
